How to Get to Baa Atoll

Seaplane and domestic flight options from the capital

Seaplane Transfers

Most resort guests reach Baa Atoll by seaplane, flying from the seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport in Malé. The flight takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes and provides spectacular aerial views of the atolls, reefs, and deep channels that characterize the Maldivian seascape. Seaplanes are operated by Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian Air Taxi, and transfers are typically arranged directly through the resort as part of the booking process. As seaplanes operate only during daylight hours — roughly 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM — international travelers arriving on evening flights will need to spend a night in Malé or at an airport hotel before continuing their journey the next morning. The cost of seaplane transfers varies by resort but generally ranges from 400 to 600 US dollars per person for a round trip.

Domestic Flights to Dharavandhoo

Dharavandhoo airport, opened in 2012, provides a cost-effective alternative to seaplane transfers for reaching Baa Atoll. Maldivian Airlines operates multiple daily flights from Velana International Airport, with the journey taking approximately 30 minutes by turboprop aircraft. Domestic flights are significantly cheaper than seaplane transfers, typically costing between 150 and 250 US dollars round trip. From Dharavandhoo, speedboat transfers to resorts and guesthouse islands throughout Baa Atoll take between 10 and 45 minutes depending on the destination. This route is particularly popular with guesthouse travelers and those visiting inhabited islands like Dharavandhoo itself, Eydhafushi, and Thulhaadhoo.

Speedboat Connections Within the Atoll

Once in Baa Atoll, getting between islands is primarily by speedboat. Resorts operate their own boats for guest transfers, while public speedboat services connect the inhabited islands on scheduled routes. The atoll is compact enough that most inter-island transfers take less than 30 minutes. During the manta season, excursion boats to Hanifaru Bay depart from multiple departure points across the atoll. Travelers staying on inhabited islands should coordinate with their guesthouse hosts for transfer arrangements and local boat schedules.

Best Time to Travel

While Baa Atoll can be visited year-round, timing your trip to coincide with the manta feeding season at Hanifaru Bay — June through November — adds an extraordinary dimension to the experience. The southwest monsoon during these months can bring occasional rain and slightly rougher seas, but conditions are generally manageable and the marine encounters more than compensate. The dry northeast monsoon season from December through April offers the calmest seas and best visibility for general diving and snorkeling.
