Overview of Dhiffushi
Dhiffushi is a small local island in North Kaafu Atoll, situated about 35 kilometres north of Malé. With a population of around 1,200 people, it is a quiet and laid-back alternative to busier tourist islands like Maafushi. What sets Dhiffushi apart is its remarkably long bikini beach, which stretches along the northern tip of the island and is considered one of the finest public beaches in Kaafu Atoll. The island has a growing number of guesthouses catering to budget travellers, but it retains a distinctly peaceful atmosphere that appeals to visitors seeking a more authentic, unhurried Maldivian experience.
The Beach That Draws Visitors
The main attraction of Dhiffushi is its beach. The bikini beach on the northern end of the island is a wide, soft stretch of white sand with clear turquoise water. Unlike the often crowded bikini beach on Maafushi, Dhiffushi's beach is spacious and rarely feels busy. You can lay out a towel, swim, and relax without the sense of being packed in with other tourists. The water is shallow and calm on most days, making it suitable for families with children. At low tide, sandbanks emerge nearby, and you can sometimes wade out quite far before the water reaches your waist. The beach faces west, which means spectacular sunsets paint the sky in oranges and pinks most evenings.
Island Atmosphere
Dhiffushi has the feel of a genuine Maldivian village. The streets are sandy, trees provide shade along the pathways, and local life carries on at its own pace. Fishermen head out early in the morning and return with their catch later in the day. Children play in the streets after school, and the pace of life is noticeably slower than on more developed islands. There are a handful of small shops selling basics, a few restaurants and cafes catering to tourists, and the guesthouses are typically small family-run operations where hosts take genuine pride in welcoming visitors. This intimate scale means you get to know the island and its people quickly.
Snorkeling and Marine Life
Dhiffushi offers good snorkeling opportunities both around the island and at nearby sites accessible by short boat trips. The house reef is accessible from the beach in some areas and features a variety of coral formations and reef fish. Guesthouses can arrange snorkeling excursions to better reefs in the surrounding atoll, where you may encounter sea turtles, rays, and larger schools of fish. The waters around North Kaafu Atoll are generally clear, and visibility tends to be excellent during the dry season from November through April.
Getting There and Practical Information
Dhiffushi is accessible by public ferry from Malé, making it a straightforward and affordable destination to reach. Speedboat transfers are also available for those who prefer a faster journey. The island is small enough to walk around entirely in about fifteen minutes. There are no ATMs on the island, so it is advisable to bring enough cash. Most guesthouses accept card payments, but smaller shops and restaurants may prefer cash. As with all local islands, modest dress is expected outside the bikini beach area, and alcohol is not available.
