How to Get to Dhigurah

Dhigurah is located in the southern part of Ari Atoll, roughly 100 kilometres from Malé. Several transport options connect the island to the capital and the international airport, ranging from budget ferries to quick domestic flights.

Speedboat Transfer

The most popular option for tourists is a private speedboat transfer arranged through a guesthouse or dive centre on Dhigurah. The journey from Malé takes approximately two hours across open water, passing through the channel between North and South Malé Atoll before entering Ari Atoll. Speedboat transfers typically cost between 50 and 70 US dollars per person each way. Most guesthouses will meet you at the airport or Malé harbour and handle the logistics. The ride can be bumpy in rough seas, particularly during the southwest monsoon from May to October, so come prepared with motion sickness remedies if you are sensitive.

Public Ferry via Mahibadhoo

The government ferry service runs from Malé to Mahibadhoo, the administrative capital of Alif Dhaal Atoll, on specific days of the week. The ferry costs just a few dollars and takes several hours. From Mahibadhoo, a short local boat transfer reaches Dhigurah. Some direct ferries to Dhigurah also run on certain days, though schedules change and should be confirmed in advance with the MTCC transport authority or your guesthouse. The ferry is the most affordable option and gives you a taste of how Maldivians travel between islands, but it requires patience and flexibility with timing.

Domestic Flight to Maamigili

The fastest route to Dhigurah is flying from Malé to Maamigili domestic airport, which is located on an island just a short boat ride from Dhigurah. The flight takes about 25 minutes and is operated by Maldivian Airlines with daily service. From Maamigili, a speedboat transfer of roughly 10 to 15 minutes brings you to Dhigurah. The combined cost of flight and boat is higher than a direct speedboat from Malé, but it eliminates the long open-water crossing and is significantly faster. This is the best option for travellers who are prone to seasickness or short on time.

Island Hopping

Dhigurah can be combined with other South Ari Atoll islands in an island-hopping itinerary. Neighbouring Dhangethi is a short boat ride away, and transfers between the two are inexpensive and easy to arrange. Some travellers also include visits to Mahibadhoo or continue north to the islands of North Ari Atoll, creating a multi-island exploration of the entire atoll system. Your guesthouse can help coordinate inter-island transfers.

Arrival Tips

Coordinate your arrival time with your guesthouse well in advance, particularly if you are arriving on an international flight and need a same-day transfer. For late arrivals in Malé, spending the first night in Hulhumalé or Malé and catching a morning speedboat or flight is the practical approach. Bring sun protection, water, and a light jacket for the speedboat ride, as the wind can be cool at speed even in tropical heat.
