The Bikini Beach
Gulhi's bikini beach is located on the southern tip of the island and is a charming stretch of white sand bordered by palm trees. The beach is the designated area where tourists can wear swimwear, and it is separated from the rest of the island by natural vegetation and some screening. What makes this beach special is its quietness. With only a small number of guesthouses on the island, the beach is rarely busy. On most days, you will share it with just a handful of other visitors or have it completely to yourself. The sand is soft and white, the water is clear and warm, and the overall atmosphere is one of peaceful relaxation. The Sandbank
Near Gulhi, a sandbank emerges at low tide, creating an additional beach area that feels even more remote and pristine than the island's own shores. This sandbank is a strip of pure white sand surrounded by shallow turquoise water, and it offers some of the most photogenic scenery in the Maldives. At its most expansive during low spring tides, the sandbank is large enough to walk around and explore, with shallow pools of crystal-clear water forming around its edges. Some guesthouses arrange trips to the sandbank by boat, though depending on its distance and the tide, it may be possible to wade there. The experience of standing on a tiny sandbank in the middle of the ocean, with nothing but water and sky in every direction, is profoundly memorable.
Swimming Conditions
The water around Gulhi's beaches is warm year-round, with temperatures staying between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius. The bikini beach has a sandy bottom that slopes gently into the lagoon, making it safe for swimmers of all abilities and ideal for families with children. The water is typically calm, especially on the sheltered side of the island, and visibility is good enough to spot small fish even while wading in the shallows. During the monsoon season from May to October, conditions can be slightly rougher on the exposed side, but the bikini beach remains largely protected. There are no lifeguards or safety equipment on the beach, so swimmers should exercise normal caution, particularly when swimming beyond the shallow areas.
Sunset and Atmosphere
The bikini beach on Gulhi faces a direction that captures beautiful sunset light, and the evening golden hour is a magical time on the island. As the sun descends, the sky transforms through shades of gold, orange, and pink, and the water reflects these colours in a display that changes by the minute. Locals and visitors alike tend to gravitate toward the waterfront at this time, and there is a communal sense of appreciation for the daily spectacle. The quietness of Gulhi makes the sunset experience feel more intimate than on busier islands where crowds gather. After the sun sets, the beach becomes very peaceful, with the sound of gentle waves and the occasional call of a seabird the only accompaniment to the fading light.
Beach Practicalities
Gulhi's beach is natural and undeveloped, with no commercial facilities directly on the sand. There are no sun lounger rentals, beach bars, or water sports operators on the beach itself. Your guesthouse is the source of beach towels, snorkeling equipment, and anything else you might need. Bring water and sun protection with you, as the nearest shop is a short walk back through the village. The palm trees along the edge of the beach provide some natural shade, but much of the beach is open and exposed to the sun. The lack of development is part of the charm, and the beach feels genuine and unspoiled in a way that more commercially managed beaches sometimes do not.
