Public Ferry from Malé
The most affordable way to reach Huraa is on the public ferry that connects Malé to islands in North Malé Atoll. The ferry departs from the Villingili ferry terminal and makes stops at several islands along the route, with the journey to Huraa taking approximately 60 to 75 minutes. Tickets cost just a few Maldivian rufiyaa, making it an extremely budget-friendly option. The ferry typically runs on specific days of the week, with schedules that can change seasonally, so checking current timetables before your trip is essential. The ride is a pleasant experience in itself — you travel alongside local commuters, school children, and families, and the views across the atoll waters are beautiful on a clear day. The ferry can accommodate luggage, though space is limited during busy periods.
Speedboat Transfer
Speedboats offer a faster alternative, covering the distance from Malé to Huraa in roughly 20 to 25 minutes. Most guesthouses on Huraa can arrange speedboat transfers for their guests, with prices typically ranging from 25 to 35 US dollars per person each way. Some speedboat services are shared, combining passengers heading to Huraa with those going to nearby islands like Himmafushi or Thulusdhoo, which can reduce costs. Speedboats depart from jetties near the Malé fish market or from Hulhumalé. The ride is quick and direct but can be bouncy in rough seas, particularly during the southwest monsoon from May to November.
From the Airport
If you are arriving at Velana International Airport and heading directly to Huraa, you will first need to cross to Malé by airport ferry or taxi boat, then catch your speedboat or public ferry to Huraa from the Malé jetty. Some guesthouses arrange direct speedboat pickups from the airport area, which saves time and avoids the need to transit through Malé. If your flight arrives late in the day, an overnight stay in Malé or Hulhumalé may be necessary, as speedboat services to Huraa typically do not run after dark. The proximity of Huraa to the capital makes it one of the easiest local islands in the Maldives to reach, and most visitors are on the island within a couple of hours of landing.
