How to Get to North Malé Atoll

The easiest atoll to reach in the Maldives, with the international airport sitting right inside it

North Malé Atoll enjoys a unique advantage over every other atoll in the Maldives: Velana International Airport is located within it. The airport sits on Hulhulé island, adjacent to the capital Malé and the reclaimed city of Hulhumalé, making North Malé Atoll the most convenient destination for any visitor arriving by international flight. No seaplane transfer or domestic flight is needed — you can be on your resort island or local island within minutes to an hour of clearing customs.

Resort Transfers

Most resorts in North Malé Atoll arrange speedboat transfers directly from the airport jetty. These private boats typically meet guests at the arrivals terminal and whisk them to their resort island in anywhere from 15 minutes for the closest properties to around one hour for islands on the northern or southern edges of the atoll. Transfer costs are usually included in resort packages or charged separately at rates ranging from 100 to 300 US dollars per person round trip, depending on the distance and the resort's pricing tier.

Public Ferries to Local Islands

For budget travellers heading to local islands, the public ferry system operated by MTCC (Maldives Transport and Contracting Company) provides affordable connections from Malé to the inhabited islands of North Malé Atoll. Ferries depart from Villingili Ferry Terminal in Malé and serve islands including Thulusdhoo, Himmafushi, Huraa, Dhiffushi, and Gaafaru. Services typically run once daily or several times per week depending on the island, with journey times ranging from one to two hours. Fares are remarkably low, usually between 30 and 50 Maldivian rufiyaa (roughly 2 to 3 US dollars) per person. Note that ferries do not run on Fridays, the weekly holiday in the Maldives.

Private Speedboat Transfers

Many guesthouses on local islands arrange private speedboat transfers for their guests. These are faster and more flexible than the public ferry, typically taking 20 to 45 minutes depending on the destination island. Costs range from 25 to 50 US dollars per person each way, and boats can often be arranged to depart at times that suit your flight schedule. This is particularly useful for late-night arrivals or early-morning departures when ferries are not running.

Getting Around Within the Atoll

Once you are on your chosen island, getting around North Malé Atoll is straightforward. Local boat operators on inhabited islands offer day trips and transfers to neighbouring islands, dive sites, surf breaks, and sandbanks. Prices are usually negotiable and depend on distance and group size. Some guesthouses maintain their own boats for guest excursions, simplifying the booking process. On the islands themselves, everything is walkable — even the largest local islands can be crossed on foot in 15 minutes.
