How to Get to Rasdhoo

Speedboat and ferry connections from Malé to this tiny atoll at the edge of Ari Atoll

Rasdhoo is located approximately 56 kilometres west of Malé, at the northeastern edge of the larger Ari Atoll system. It is further from the capital than islands in Kaafu Atoll but still well within reach by speedboat or public ferry. The journey is part of the adventure, crossing open water between atolls with views of distant islands on the horizon.

Speedboat Transfers

Private speedboat transfers arranged through your guesthouse are the fastest option, taking approximately 90 minutes from Malé or the airport depending on sea conditions. Costs typically range from 40 to 60 US dollars per person each way, though prices can vary based on the season and group size. Some guesthouses operate shared transfers at set times with lower per-person rates. Speedboats can be arranged to meet your flight, making this the most convenient option for arrivals at odd hours. The ride crosses the open channel between Kaafu Atoll and Rasdhoo Atoll, which can be rough during the southwest monsoon, so prepare accordingly if you are prone to motion sickness.

Public Ferry

The MTCC ferry from Malé to Rasdhoo is the budget option, costing around 55 to 70 Maldivian rufiyaa (roughly 3.50 to 4.50 US dollars). The journey takes approximately three to four hours, with the ferry making stops at other islands along the route. Services typically run several times per week rather than daily, so it is important to check the schedule with your guesthouse in advance. Ferries do not operate on Fridays. Despite the longer travel time, the ferry is a comfortable way to travel if your schedule allows, offering the chance to see multiple islands and watch the ocean scenery unfold at a leisurely pace.

From the Airport

Arriving at Velana International Airport, most travellers heading to Rasdhoo take a guesthouse-arranged speedboat transfer. The guesthouse will typically arrange for someone to meet you at the airport and handle the boat connection. If you plan to take the ferry, you will need to get from the airport to Malé's Villingili Ferry Terminal, which involves a taxi boat or bus to Malé followed by a short ride to the terminal. Given the ferry schedule, you may need to spend a night in Malé or Hulhumalé if your flight arrives after the ferry has departed.

Planning Tips

Book your transfer well in advance, especially during peak season from December to April when demand is high. The open water crossing between atolls can be choppy, particularly from May to October during the southwest monsoon. Motion sickness medication is worth having on hand. If travelling by ferry, pack snacks and water as there may be limited refreshments available on board. Confirm your return transfer at least a day before departure to ensure availability.
