The beaches of South Malé Atoll rank among the most accessible and enjoyable in the Maldives for budget travellers. Each of the atoll's three inhabited local islands has a designated bikini beach where tourists can swim and sunbathe in Western swimwear, a notable provision in this Muslim nation where modest dress is expected in village areas. Beyond the local island beaches, the atoll's uninhabited sandbanks provide some of the most photogenic beach experiences available anywhere in the archipelago.
Maafushi Bikini Beach
Maafushi's bikini beach occupies the eastern side of the island, separated from the village area by a screen of vegetation and low walls. The beach stretches for several hundred metres and features soft white sand sloping gently into a lagoon that is shallow and calm for much of the year. Sun loungers are available for hire from nearby water sports centres and guesthouses. The water is clear and warm, with visibility often extending to the sandy bottom several metres out. While Maafushi's bikini beach is the most visited in South Malé Atoll and can feel busy during peak season, it remains a pleasant spot for swimming and relaxation, with easy access to drinks, snacks, and water sports right on the shore.
Gulhi Bikini Beach
Gulhi's bikini beach is widely considered the more beautiful of the two main local island beaches in the atoll. A gentle crescent of fine white sand curves around a sheltered lagoon on the southern tip of the island, facing turquoise water that deepens gradually to a rich blue. The beach sees far fewer visitors than Maafushi's, creating a more peaceful and intimate atmosphere. There are fewer facilities here — a handful of loungers and a small beach bar — but the natural beauty more than compensates. The snorkelling directly off the beach is also rewarding, with small coral patches hosting colourful reef fish just a short swim from the sand.
Guraidhoo Bikini Beach
Guraidhoo's designated beach area is the least developed of the three, offering a quiet stretch of sand that is ideal for travellers seeking genuine tranquillity. The beach is smaller than those on Maafushi and Gulhi but enjoys beautiful views across the open water and is rarely crowded. Swimming conditions are good, though currents can be stronger here due to the island's position near a channel. The relative lack of tourism development means there are fewer amenities, but nearby guesthouses can arrange chairs and refreshments.
Sandbank Excursions
The sandbank trips available from South Malé Atoll are among the most popular activities for visitors. These tiny islands of white sand, some barely larger than a tennis court, emerge from the turquoise lagoon and provide an unforgettable setting for a day out. Half-day and full-day trips typically include boat transport, snorkelling equipment, and a barbecue lunch of freshly grilled fish, rice, and salad. Some sandbanks have small shelters for shade, while others are completely bare, offering nothing but sand, sea, and sky. The experience of standing on a minuscule strip of land in the middle of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by water in every shade of blue, is uniquely Maldivian.
