How to Get to South Malé Atoll

Fast speedboats, affordable ferries, and practical transport tips for reaching the atoll's local islands

South Malé Atoll is one of the easiest atolls to reach in the Maldives after North Malé, separated from the capital by only the Vaadhu Channel. The journey from Malé or the airport to any of the three inhabited local islands — Maafushi, Gulhi, or Guraidhoo — takes between 30 minutes and one hour depending on your mode of transport and destination. Multiple daily connections make it straightforward to plan your arrival regardless of your flight timing.

Speedboat Transfers

The fastest way to reach South Malé Atoll is by private speedboat arranged through your guesthouse. Most Maafushi guesthouses offer airport or Malé pickup with speedboat transfer for approximately 25 to 40 US dollars per person each way. The journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes depending on sea conditions. Speedboats can be arranged to depart at flexible times, which is particularly useful for late-night flight arrivals or early-morning departures. Some transfer services operate shared speedboats at set departure times for lower per-person costs. Guesthouses on Gulhi and Guraidhoo offer similar services, with Guraidhoo transfers taking slightly longer as the island is further south.

Public Ferry

The MTCC public ferry from Malé provides the most affordable route to South Malé Atoll. Ferries to Maafushi depart from Villingili Ferry Terminal in Malé, typically running daily except Fridays. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes and costs around 30 to 50 Maldivian rufiyaa (roughly 2 to 3 US dollars). The ferry also serves Gulhi and Guraidhoo, with the full route taking longer. Schedules can change, so it is wise to confirm departure times with your guesthouse a day in advance. Ferries can be crowded during peak travel periods, and there is limited luggage space, so travelling light helps.

From the Airport

If arriving on an international flight, the typical route to South Malé Atoll starts with a short taxi boat or bus ride from Velana International Airport to Malé's jetty area, where you connect with either a speedboat transfer or the public ferry. Many guesthouses arrange end-to-end transfers that handle the airport pickup, the crossing to Malé, and the speedboat south, simplifying the logistics. If you are connecting via ferry, you may need to spend a few hours in Malé waiting for the next departure, and your guesthouse can advise on the best timing.

Getting Around the Atoll

Once based on any of the local islands, getting around South Malé Atoll is easy. Local boat operators run inter-island transfers, dive trip boats, and excursion vessels. The distances between Maafushi, Gulhi, and Guraidhoo are short, and day trips between the islands are common. Resort day visits are also arranged by boat from the local islands. On the islands themselves, everything is walkable in a matter of minutes.
