Thoddoo offers a refreshing mix of activities that reflect its unique character as an agricultural island with outstanding marine life. Unlike busier guesthouse islands where water sports dominate, Thoddoo blends land-based experiences with excellent underwater encounters, creating an itinerary that feels genuinely different from anywhere else in the Maldives.
Turtle Snorkeling
The standout activity on Thoddoo is snorkeling with sea turtles on the house reef. Both green turtles and hawksbill turtles are resident here, and they are remarkably comfortable around humans. You can swim out from the bikini beach or the western shore and find turtles grazing on seagrass or resting on coral ledges. Early morning sessions tend to be the most productive, as the turtles are actively feeding and the water is calm. Guesthouses can point you to the best entry points, or you can join a guided snorkeling trip that visits the most reliable turtle spots along the reef.
Farm Visits
Touring Thoddoo's farms is an experience unique in the Maldives. Local guides take visitors through the island's agricultural interior, walking among rows of watermelon vines, papaya orchards, banana groves, and vegetable plots. Farmers are generally happy to explain their techniques and the challenges of growing crops on a small coral island. During the watermelon season, you may get to taste freshly picked fruit straight from the vine. These tours typically last one to two hours and can be arranged through any guesthouse on the island.
Sandbank Excursions
Several pristine sandbanks lie within easy boat distance of Thoddoo. These tiny crescents of white sand surrounded by deep blue water are the quintessential Maldives photo opportunity. Diving
While Thoddoo is better known for snorkeling, diving in North Ari Atoll is excellent. Nearby dive sites feature coral-covered thilas, channel dives with strong currents that attract pelagic species, and reef walls dropping into deep blue water. Manta rays are seen seasonally at cleaning stations in the atoll, and reef sharks, eagle rays, and large schools of fish are common. Night Snorkeling
After dark, the reef takes on an entirely different character. Night snorkeling excursions with underwater torches reveal a nocturnal world of hunting moray eels, octopuses, sleeping parrotfish in their mucus cocoons, and cruising reef sharks. On moonless nights, bioluminescent plankton can create a magical display, lighting up the water with blue-green sparks as you swim through it.
Sunset Fishing
Traditional line fishing trips depart in the late afternoon, heading to nearby reefs where grouper, snapper, and other reef fish bite readily at dusk. The catch is typically cooked at the guesthouse for dinner, making it a satisfying full-circle experience. These trips are relaxed and social, and fishing knowledge is shared generously by the local crew.
