How to Get to Ukulhas

Speedboat and ferry routes from Malé to this eco-island in North Ari Atoll

Ukulhas is located in North Ari Atoll (Alifu Alifu Atoll), approximately 70 kilometres west of Malé. It is further from the capital than the popular Kaafu Atoll islands, requiring a longer boat journey that crosses open water between atolls. The additional travel time is rewarded by reaching a quieter, more pristine destination that feels genuinely removed from the busier tourism hubs.

Speedboat Transfers

Private speedboat transfers arranged through your guesthouse are the most practical option for reaching Ukulhas. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours from Malé or the airport, depending on sea conditions and the power of the boat. Costs typically range from 45 to 65 US dollars per person each way, with some operators offering shared transfers at set departure times for lower rates. Guesthouses handle all the logistics, meeting you at the airport and arranging the boat connection seamlessly. This is the recommended option for most travellers, particularly those arriving on late flights when the ferry is not available.

Public Ferry

The MTCC public ferry connects Malé to Ukulhas via several other islands in Ari Atoll. The journey takes approximately four to five hours, with stops along the route adding to the travel time. Ferry services run several times per week rather than daily, so checking the schedule in advance is essential. Fares are extremely affordable at around 55 to 80 Maldivian rufiyaa (roughly 3.50 to 5 US dollars) per person. Ferries do not run on Fridays. Despite the longer journey, the ferry is a scenic and budget-friendly option that gives you a sense of the distances and the oceanic landscape of the Maldives.

Connecting Through Rasdhoo

Travellers who are visiting both Rasdhoo and Ukulhas can take advantage of the relative proximity of the two islands. Local boat transfers between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas can be arranged through guesthouses on either island, and the journey takes around 30 to 45 minutes. This makes it practical to split your time between the two islands, enjoying the diving focus of Rasdhoo and the eco-beach focus of Ukulhas in a single trip.

Practical Considerations

The open water crossing between Kaafu Atoll and Ari Atoll can be choppy, particularly during the southwest monsoon from May to October. If you are susceptible to motion sickness, take precautions before the journey. Pack light for the ferry as space is limited. Book your speedboat transfer at least a few days in advance during peak season from December to April, when demand is highest. Confirm your return transfer at least 24 hours before departure to ensure a spot on the boat.
