7-Day Classic Honeymoon
The romantic resort experience with overwater villas and private dining.
A budget-friendly itinerary through the local islands of South Malé Atoll — guesthouses, bikini beaches, snorkeling, and real Maldivian life.
This itinerary is designed for travellers who want to experience the Maldives without the resort price tag. Over five days, you will stay on two local islands in South Malé Atoll — Maafushi and Gulhi — travelling between them by public ferry. You will sleep in guesthouses, eat at local restaurants, snorkel off the beach, visit a sandbank, and get a genuine sense of how Maldivians actually live.
This route works year-round, though the dry season (November to April) offers the best weather. Total accommodation costs for five nights typically range from $250 to $500, with meals and activities adding another $200 to $400.
Land at Velana International Airport and take the public ferry or a shared speedboat to Maafushi in South Malé Atoll. The speedboat takes about 30 minutes; the public ferry takes around 90 minutes and runs in the afternoon. If your flight arrives late, spend the first night in a hotel near the airport in Hulhumalé and catch the morning speedboat the next day.
Once on Maafushi, check into your guesthouse and take a walk around the island. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other. Find the bikini beach on the eastern side, settle in, and watch the sunset from the western shore. Eat dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants — grilled fish with rice and salad is typically around $8 to $12.
Spend the morning snorkeling off Maafushi's bikini beach. The house reef is not far offshore and you can see reef fish, small rays, and occasionally a sea turtle. If you want better snorkeling, book a half-day snorkeling trip through your guesthouse — these typically visit two or three reef sites and cost $25 to $40 per person.
In the afternoon, join a sandbank trip. Your guesthouse can arrange a boat to drop you on a nearby sandbank — a tiny strip of white sand surrounded by turquoise water with nothing else in sight. Bring sunscreen, water, and your snorkel gear. Most trips cost $20 to $35 per person and last two to three hours.
Back on Maafushi, try a local café for hedhikaa — savoury afternoon snacks like bajiya (samosa-like pastries) and gulha (fish-filled dumplings), served with sweet tea for less than $3.
Start early with a dolphin cruise. Boats leave around 5:30 to 6:00 in the morning and head into the channel between the atolls where pods of spinner dolphins feed. The experience lasts about two hours and costs $25 to $40 per person. Seeing dozens of dolphins leaping and spinning in the early light is one of the highlights of any Maldives trip.
Spend the rest of the day at your own pace. Walk through Maafushi's neighbourhoods, visit the small shops, watch the fishermen at the harbour, or rent a kayak and paddle along the shoreline. In the evening, book a sunset fishing trip — you head out on a traditional dhoni and try handline fishing as the sun drops. If you catch something, your guesthouse may cook it for your dinner.
Take the short ferry ride to Gulhi, a much quieter island just 10 minutes from Maafushi. Gulhi has a fraction of the guesthouses and tourists, giving it a noticeably more local feel. Check into your guesthouse and spend the day on Gulhi's beautiful bikini beach, which is often nearly empty.
Snorkel off the beach — Gulhi's reef is accessible from shore and often has better visibility than Maafushi. In the late afternoon, walk through the village. Gulhi is small enough to see everything in 15 minutes, but the quiet streets, the small mosque, and the fishing harbour give you an authentic glimpse of daily Maldivian life without any tourist infrastructure in the way.
Take the morning ferry back towards Malé. If your flight is in the evening, you have time to explore the capital. Visit the Malé fish market, walk through the narrow streets of the old town, see the Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque), and pick up souvenirs at the local market. The city is compact and walkable.
Head to the airport via the bridge from Malé to Hulhumalé, or take the short ferry from Malé to the airport island. Allow at least two hours before your international departure.
