Ferries and Speedboats

How to travel between islands by sea, from budget public ferries to private speedboat transfers

The MTCC Public Ferry System

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) operates the national public ferry network, connecting inhabited islands across the country. This is the most affordable way to travel between islands and the primary mode of transport for local Maldivians.

Public ferries are large vessels that carry passengers, cargo, and sometimes vehicles. They run on fixed schedules, typically departing in the morning and returning in the afternoon. The service connects Male to islands within each atoll, though not all islands have daily services.

Fares are remarkably cheap, usually between MVR 20 and MVR 80 ($1 to $5) per journey. Tickets are purchased at the ferry terminal or sometimes on board. The ferries are air-conditioned with indoor seating, and most have an open deck area.

The most relevant routes for tourists include Male to islands in North Male Atoll and South Male Atoll, such as Maafushi, Dhiffushi, Huraa, and Thulusdhoo.

Ferry Routes and Schedules

Understanding the ferry schedule is essential for planning your trip. Key points about ferry operations:

The ferry from Male to Maafushi, one of the most popular tourist islands, takes approximately 90 minutes and costs about MVR 48 ($3). Schedules can change, so always confirm departure times at the ferry terminal or through your guesthouse.

For travel to more distant atolls, consider combining a domestic flight with a local ferry or speedboat. See our full getting around guide for an overview of all transport options.

Speedboat Transfers

Speedboats are faster, more flexible, and more expensive than public ferries. They are the primary transfer method for resorts in nearby atolls and can also be arranged for travel between local islands.

Resort speedboat transfers are typically arranged by the resort as part of your booking. You will be met at Velana International Airport and escorted to the resort's speedboat. Costs vary widely:

For local island travel, guesthouses can arrange private speedboat transfers. A speedboat from Hulhumale to Maafushi costs about $25 to $40 per person and takes 30 to 40 minutes, compared to the 90-minute public ferry.

Booking Tips and Practicalities

Whether you are taking a public ferry or arranging a speedboat, these tips will help ensure smooth travel:

Dealing with Seasickness

Boat travel in the Maldives can be rough, especially during the southwest monsoon (May to November) when seas are choppier. Even experienced sailors can feel queasy on a bouncy speedboat ride.

To minimise discomfort:

If seasickness is a serious concern, consider choosing accommodation on islands closer to the airport that require shorter boat rides, or opt for a seaplane transfer instead. Check our health guide for medication advice.

Luggage on Boats

Luggage handling on Maldivian boats is generally relaxed but worth thinking about. Public ferries have open storage areas where luggage is placed, and there is no weight limit within reason. Speedboats have limited storage space, so oversized luggage can be problematic.

Keep these luggage tips in mind:

Resort speedboats typically handle luggage for you with porters loading and unloading your bags. On public ferries and local speedboats, you are responsible for your own luggage.
