7-Day Classic Honeymoon

The quintessential Maldives honeymoon — overwater villas, private dining, sunset cruises, and a week designed for romance.

Overview

This itinerary is for couples who want the full Maldives honeymoon experience. You will spend seven days at a single resort, staying in an overwater villa with direct lagoon access. The week balances relaxation with curated romantic experiences — a private beach dinner, a sunset cruise, couples spa treatments, a sandbank picnic, and world-class snorkeling on the house reef.

The itinerary is based on a mid-range to luxury resort in South Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll, reachable by speedboat or seaplane. It works at any resort — simply swap the specific excursions for whatever your resort offers.

At a Glance

Day 1 — Arrival and Settling In

Arrive at Velana International Airport and transfer to your resort by speedboat or seaplane. Most resorts greet you with a welcome drink and a brief orientation. Check into your overwater villa, step onto the deck, and take in the lagoon stretching out beneath you.

Spend the afternoon exploring the island on foot — most resort islands can be walked in 15 to 30 minutes. Find the main beach, locate the house reef entry point, and get your bearings. In the evening, dine at the resort's main restaurant and watch the sunset from the bar. Do not plan too much today — you have just arrived and the Maldives will still be here tomorrow.

Day 2 — House Reef and Relaxation

After breakfast on your villa deck, head to the house reef for your first snorkel. Many resort house reefs are exceptional — expect colourful reef fish, parrotfish crunching coral, moray eels peering from crevices, and if you are lucky, reef sharks and turtles cruising past. The resort's water sports centre can provide gear if you did not bring your own.

Spend the afternoon by the pool or on the beach. Book a couples spa treatment for the late afternoon — most resorts have overwater spa pavilions where you can hear the ocean beneath the floor during your massage. This is the Maldives at its most indulgent.

Day 3 — Sunset Cruise

Take a leisurely morning. Sleep in, have a late breakfast, and swim in the lagoon directly from your villa steps. Many overwater villas have glass floor panels — look down to spot fish passing beneath your room.

In the late afternoon, board a traditional dhoni for a sunset cruise. The boat heads out into the open atoll as the sky turns gold and pink. Most cruises include drinks and canapes. You will likely spot dolphins — spinner dolphins are common in the channels between islands. As the sun drops below the horizon, the colours reflected on the water are extraordinary.

Day 4 — Sandbank Picnic for Two

This is the signature day. After breakfast, a boat takes the two of you to a private sandbank — a tiny island of white sand surrounded by nothing but turquoise water and sky. The resort sets up a picnic with cushions, a hamper of food, and snorkeling gear. You are left alone for two to three hours with the ocean to yourselves.

Snorkel around the sandbank — the shallow water is often teeming with juvenile fish, rays, and small sharks. Swim, eat, take photographs, and enjoy the kind of isolation that simply does not exist in most of the world. The boat returns to collect you in the early afternoon.

In the evening, arrange a private beach dinner. Many resorts set up a candlelit table on the sand with a dedicated chef and server. The meal is usually a multi-course set menu with wine pairings. This typically costs $200 to $500 per couple but is one of the most memorable meals you will ever have.

Day 5 — Diving or Snorkeling Excursion

Join the resort's guided snorkeling excursion to an outer reef or channel. These trips visit sites beyond the house reef where the marine life is more dramatic — large schools of jackfish, eagle rays, and in certain seasons and locations, manta rays at cleaning stations. If you are certified divers, book a two-tank dive instead — the Maldives offers some of the best dive sites in the world.

Spend the afternoon relaxing. Read on your villa deck, swim in the pool, or try a stand-up paddleboard session on the lagoon. Many resorts include non-motorised water sports in the room rate.

Day 6 — Free Day and Sunset Fishing

Today is yours. Some couples book a second spa session, others snorkel the house reef again, and some simply spend the day moving between their villa deck, the pool, and the beach. The beauty of a resort stay is that there is no pressure to do anything at all.

In the late afternoon, try sunset fishing on a traditional dhoni. The crew teaches you to handline fish as the sun sets. If you catch something, many resorts will prepare it for your dinner — there is something deeply satisfying about eating a fish you caught yourself, cooked by the resort chef, with the ocean in front of you.

Day 7 — Departure

Enjoy a final breakfast on your villa deck. If your transfer allows, take one last swim in the lagoon or a morning snorkel on the house reef. Check out and transfer back to the airport.

If you have time before your flight, the resort may arrange a late checkout. Otherwise, some resorts have a departure lounge where you can shower and relax before your transfer. Allow plenty of time for the seaplane or speedboat connection — seaplanes operate only during daylight hours and can be delayed by weather.
